Mountain House began in 1979 in Punta Arenas, the southest city of the Chilean Patagonia, which is gateway to Antartica. It takes only 5 hours to get to Antarctica by plane from Punta Arenas.

Patagonia is a perfect destinations for those who love nature. Amazing Glaciers, mountains and fjords are the most required places to visit.

At least 15 years before Patagonia turned to be a very desirable destination, Mountain House began to introduce into the Region technical gear from a variety of brands. It has always been "the technical store" and keeps offering the best products to travellers to this faraway lands.

Designed and tweaked by its owner, a man born in Punta Arenas who enjoyed outdoors activities since was 6 years old with his family. Experience and vision has been the key for success.

THE HISTORY
The original Store JEANSPORT as most people know us was established by José M. Hidalgo in 1980, who at the age of 20 started selling sportswear from house to house. A year later he establishes his store in a small space of 16m.

In the beggining, just one competitor in casual wear; now the most important distributor in this issue, Mountain Products and Technical Outerwear of the region.

Very interested in Outdoors and Mountain activities, the sore grows up to 250m2 split in three levels in the year 1985.

Today the business has changed and the store specializes in technical Outerwear only, changing its name to MOUNTAIN HOUSE in 2007.

José M. Hidalgo keeps working everyday in the store being able to detect every change in the needs of the customers and the business.

SPECIAL TAX EXEMPTIONS
Chilean Patagonia (Punta Arenas City) has its special tax exemptions.
Here we don't pay neither Customs nor internal taxes, which are 25% over the CIF Value as the rest of the country does, including Santiago for goods from 30USD.

To operate under this regime, we have a signed contract with Punta Arenas Zona Franca (TAX FREE ZONE) and the goods we import are delivered from the foreign exporter straight to us without tax.

That is why this region does not buy technical Outerwear from Chilean Distributors. They have already paid the 25% TAX, and the cost of transportation to this remote area is expensive, so the final cost is too high, about 35% and 40% more!!!

That is why we`ve been Marmot Distributors for 15 years even though there is a distributor in Chile.
